What is Claude
Anthropic’s family of large language models, and the chat assistant built on them. A peer of OpenAI’s GPT.
In plain terms
Claude names both the models Anthropic trains and the chat assistant most people meet them through. Developers build on Claude through Anthropic’s paid API, sending prompts and reading back answers, the same shape as building on GPT. Claude Code is a separate product: a coding agent that uses the Claude models to write code in a developer’s project.
What it tells you about a developer
Claude experience is model integration experience, and it transfers directly to GPT and Google’s Gemini. Developers often build on two or more providers at once and switch based on cost and quality.
