What is VS Code

Microsoft’s free code editor, released in 2015. It is the most widely used editor among professional developers.

In plain terms

Visual Studio Code, usually shortened to VS Code, is the app most developers type their code in. It is free, works with every major language, and grows through thousands of extensions. VS Code is an app the developer works in. React is code the developer builds with, and it ships inside the product. VS Code ships in nothing.

What it tells you about a developer

VS Code use is near universal and reads as a sensible default. On its own it carries almost no hiring signal, which is itself worth knowing, because it appears on many resumes anyway.
